Welcome to the Silent Zone: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller by Csák Viktor is a supernatural dystopian novel that revolves around four main characters seven years after the Breakdown, marked by the fall of humanity to zombie-like creatures known as ferals. Siblings named David and Megan flee an outpost of survivors. Pregnant, Megan neither trusts the motivation of those who have provided sanctuary nor is she willing to live forever in that single place. At a pivotal moment, they are saved from ferals by the unlikely alliance of Cassius and Abigail, whose near familial relationship remains intact despite the heavy personal loss on both sides. Megan has a secret in her belly, and possibly in her entire being, that can change the survival game radically...but first, they really do have to survive, and when ferals choose who they are going to hunt they will not stop until they've caught their prey.

Welcome to the Silent Zone by Csák Viktor offers a slightly different angle to the post-apocalyptic 'virus turns people into killing machines—who turn other people into killing machines' genre, choosing to refurbish the wheel rather than reinvent it. The writing is clean and Viktor is skilled in action scenes that keep the pace at full speed ahead. Once I got to the desirability of Megan and her baby, it did strike me as uncomfortably similar to the hook of a wildly famous video game, but in a novel format, it was fun to be immersed in the world and get to know the characters. Abigail is the most likeable and her youth gives us hope for the future. I think what I like most about her is a naivete that is refreshing in her innocence, like her only having her second drink ever in the middle of the book, and her overlooking of a document that is, in boldface font, literally called the NEW WORLD MANIFESTO, as if it's unlikely to be anything important. I laughed because that's something my own kid would do. Overall, this is a polished novel with a great, action-packed plot and a standout in the genre. Very highly recommended.

Welcome to the Silent Zone by Viktor Csák successfully blends the suspense of a dystopian world with the terrors of a zombie attack. Cassius is a rough and tough survivalist with a no-nonsense attitude, a disposition that has helped him prevail over perilous threats that are rampant in a hostile world. But as his partner in survival, a sixteen-year-old girl named Abigail is coming into her own, Cassius has more to deal with than keeping the two of them alive for another day. Abigail’s impulsive decisions and burgeoning sense of independence can be hazardous in a land where they have to contend with superhuman man-eating beasts that want nothing more than to sink their teeth into human flesh. When they join a few other survivors on their trek to Boat Town, a place purported to be secure, they embark on a path that may upend their entire future.

The action begins right away, and the horrors only increase with each encounter that Cassius and Abigail have with the savage ferals that populate the Silent Zone where they live. Even when the external threats aren’t pressing, intriguing backstories and steady discord between these two tenacious personalities maintain the strong momentum that persists throughout the book. With complicated character relationships, thrilling action sequences, disturbing adversaries, and a well-paced plotline, Welcome to the Silent Zone is a gripping and thoroughly entertaining read. If you enjoy a chilling, adrenaline-charged post-apocalyptic adventure, I’m sure you’ll love this novel by Viktor Csák.

Welcome to the Silent Zone: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller is a work of fiction in the adventure, thriller, and paranormal subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Viktor Csák. Taking the typical tropes of the zombie fiction genre and turning them into something original and fresh, this engaging, action-packed work takes place in the wastelands of North America some seven years after a pandemic-style apocalypse has occurred. David must aid his pregnant sister Megan in navigating the dangers of the plains and finding somewhere safe for her to give birth, but something special about these siblings keeps the horde hot on their trail.

Author Viktor Csák has crafted a chilling paranormal action thriller with so much depth and so many surprises that it’s hard to know where to begin the praise. The atmosphere was a constant standout feature for me, depicting desolate wastelands and desperate survivors huddled together in cloying, festering conditions. The work goes beyond the cinematic to give you a visceral feel of the pain, hunger, and hardship of the cast, which endears them to you and makes you even more invested in their survival. I liked the portrayal of the ferals themselves, eerily verging between humanistic and monstrous, with a vicious ability to keep you on the edge of your seat every time you think they might show up. Overall, Welcome to the Silent Zone is everything you could want in a post-apocalyptic thriller and I certainly hope to see a continuing series with more adventures from this horrifyingly brilliant wasted world.
