What Became Of Cinder-Ella? by J Turkington asks a question that could baffle children and parents: What if happily ever after turns out not to be so happy? At first glance, the tale is faithful to the original. A young girl becomes a scullery maid to her father’s horrible second wife and her equally cruel daughters. However, with the wave of a wand, she goes to a ball held by a dashing prince, who is instantly smitten. He then combs the kingdom to find the foot that fits the dainty slipper. At this point, the expert pen of J Turkington takes over. The broken-hearted prince cannot find her. Once freed from captivity, Cinder-Ella becomes bitter about all she has lost and learns how to do evil things. Seeing carefree children playing angers her. She was never able to enjoy this simple pleasure. She devises a wicked plan that affects everyone in the nearby town and beyond. What happens next turns into a fantastic fairy tale that pits good and evil magic against each other. A charming epilogue brings the story full circle.
To rewrite the ending of a timeless fairy tale is challenging, but J Turkington skillfully makes Cinder-Ella’s story into a ‘can’t put down book.' When learning that she has inherited her father's estate, Cinder-Ella responds in a way that says much about who she has always been. The story ends with life lessons that build upon the values that made the original Cinderella story so special. Her mature self realizes that happiness means more than wearing a glorious ball gown; lifelong devotion does not happen in an instant; and that giving someone a second chance reflects kindness and generosity. The ending is rewarding, embedding messages that will resonate with young readers in their formative years. The story of Cinderella will always remain a wonderful fairy tale. What Became Of Cinder-Ella? enhances the moral of the story in ways that will help any child reader become a better person.
