What is Foster Care? For Kids forms part of the What is? Series. Jeanette Yoffe writes for children between 6 and 9, explaining what foster care is. The narrator in the story, JJ, explains in an easy-to-understand, straightforward manner how children enter the foster care system. It is stated clearly that foster care is there to help parents who, for various reasons, cannot look after their children. These reasons are explained by focusing on the fact that the children are not to blame and foster parents act with love and kindness when taking in children needing a stable home. Through JJ, the author explains what happens in court and how social workers work together with judges to ensure that the children and parents in need of assistance are given the best care plan possible. This book is a valuable tool to teach children about the foster system.

What is Foster Care? by Jeanette Yoffe is beautifully illustrated by Devika Joglekar. As the author has firsthand knowledge of the foster care system, she knows what questions and fears children face when entering the system. This book will educate children and alleviate their concerns when entering foster care. She emphasizes that there are many reasons parents may not be able to look after their children and that foster parents are willing to stand in for the struggling parents, providing a stable and loving home. The author also states clearly that children in foster care are valuable and worthy and that many children worldwide are in foster care. I appreciated that the author included names and faces of celebrities such as Eddie Murphy and Cher, who have also been part of the foster care system. A positive and much-needed view on a subject that, at times, can be controversial.
