Author Biography

A native to the East Coast, Lisa Weckbacher grew up with a love for books and animals from an early age. As a new venture in her academic career, What Is the Shape of My Egg? is the first of a series of books titled Shape Stories with Farm Friends. The series is dedicated to nurturing children’s developing knowledge of geometric shapes and spatial thinking within meaningful, relatable contexts.

Lisa holds three master’s degrees as well as a Ph.D. in education, specialization in child and adolescent development, from UC Santa Barbara. She has served as an adjunct professor in psychology and education at various universities for more than a decade. To date, she has also published several works pertaining to the role of spatial thinking in childhood and adolescence. The implications of her research are largely related to how educators can help prepare K-12 students to pursue and ultimately succeed in STEM-oriented careers.

Lisa divides her time between Southern California and Western Montana with her family, and of course, their many feathered and furry friends.

Silkie lays a perfectly beautiful egg and announces it to the other chickens in the barn. Dottie points out that her egg is perfect but not a circle like Silkie thinks. To keep Silkie from worrying that her egg is not as perfect as she thought, the other animals find objects around the farm shaped like a circle. They find several items, such as the nightlight, the water bucket, and the fan that keeps the barn cool in the summer. Will Silkie find anything that has the same shape as her egg? Does being an oval rather than a circle make her egg less perfect? What will Silkie learn from this new experience? Find out in What Is the Shape Of My Egg? by Lisa M. Weckbacher and illustrated by Gabriela Vega.

What Is the Shape Of My Egg? is a children's story by Lisa M. Weckbacher which follows the sweet tale of Silkie and her first egg. At first, she thinks it is a perfect circle, but her friends in the barn tell her that it is something a little different. The illustrations by Gabriela Vega are adorable and will entertain kids as they read or follow along with the story. I love how Silkie’s friends helped her learn something new and how Weckbacher adds pages at the end that teach new things about shapes with simple activities. I recommend it to small children who love animals and adventurous stories.
