Terri Kelley, M.Ed, is the author of the series of Writing Is a Process books, many other children’s picture books, as well as of the chapter book series, Gingerly. Her passion for writing and reading began when she was a very young girl. She was raised in Copperas Cove, Texas where she grew up in the country with horses and lots of freedom to explore her environment. It was an idyllic childhood.
Terri is the mother of three. Her kids are all grown now and living happy and responsible lives of their own. Terri raised her kids in Granbury, TX and Tomball, TX. Both of these communities offered excellent schools and a country atmosphere that Terri enjoys. Terri still has ties to both towns as well as friends in both places.
As an adult, Terri has held a couple of different careers. Her first teaching job was with Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in Houston, TX. Her next one was as a teacher and reading specialist in Tomball, TX. It was while she taught that she became aware of the kinds of books children enjoyed reading. She also noticed areas in need of good children’s books. You will find many of her books respond to these needs.
Terri is very happily married to her best friend, Michael. Together, they live in Oakridge, OR with their black Labrador, Oliver. Terri and Michael enjoy traveling together, fishing, going to the movies, and, of course, reading great books. They have many good friends with whom they enjoy spending time as well.

What’s That in Your Ear?, written by Terri Kelley and illustrated by Milena Radeva, is a book that teaches a wonderful lesson to people of all ages. Each day we come into contact with people; some of these people may look like us, some may look very differently from us. However, it is important to remember to look past what we see and get to know the person underneath the outer shell as pointed out by Terri Kelley. Terri pinpoints a few things that people may choose to alter about their appearance that can frowned upon, questioned and lead to a stereotype such a gauge in an ear, having a tattoo, having a nose ring or having dyed hair. Having any of these things is a choice that a person makes and Terri reminds the reader that each person is given one life to live and he or she should be allowed to choose how they each want to live their lives; they have the freedom to make choices.
Terri Kelley addresses important points in What’s That in Your Ear? Often when a person sees another person with a tattoo or piercing, an opinion is formed based just upon seeing this one thing. Terri reminds us that these features do not change the person within and that this is a personal choice a person is free to make - each person is given a life to live and should be free to choose how to live his or her life and be happy. I absolutely loved the illustrations in this book; Milena Radeva did a wonderful job with these! They are so soothing and made me really take my time with reading the book as I wanted to study each illustration and notice each detail and the colors. This book would be an excellent conversation starter with your child and a great reminder for living life to the fullest for yourself and looking within others instead of just looking at one’s shell.
