When Death Comes Knocking for Your Patients: A Guide for Nurses and Palliative Caregivers by Meina J. Dubetz is a powerful nonfiction book on dealing with loss and on the importance of empathy as a fundamental tool for healing. Based on the author’s experience as an oncology nurse, this book is a hands-on guide not only for nurses and palliative caregivers but for everyone to ensure that the seriously ill can receive the right level of care. This includes the right emotional and psychological connection. It is an invaluable tool for nurses, especially those who are new to the practice, to have a look at one nurse’s 30 years of experience with end-life events that have taught her how indifference has no room in the humane field of nursing.

If wisdom comes with experience, then Meina J. Dubetz is an author worth paying attention to. She herself has survived a life-altering journey that she used as leverage to make a difference, reach out to others, and help the terminally ill maximize the quality of their lives. I am glad to have read this work, as I have a niece who is entering a new threshold as a nursing student. When Death Comes Knocking for your Patients is an excellent reference where the nuggets of truth that you get are things that you will not learn in the classroom. Dubetz writes with depth and genuine understanding for those who are near the end of their existential journey. It is a relevant resource that I highly recommend to nursing students, caregivers, and practically everyone who needs to have a good grasp of dealing with Death when he comes knocking for the people that are important in our lives.
