In When We Were Gods by Briana Brooks, Aza Scott had always wanted something exciting to happen in her life. As an archaeologist, she had always hoped that the excitement would come in the form of a great find at the archaeological dig site in Ethiopia where she'd been for the past five years. When she comes across a strange statue that doesn’t appear to belong in the ancient African ruins, the last thing she expected was for it to speak to her, let alone be an African goddess trapped inside, with Aza being the only one capable of freeing her. With the discovery of the statue, Aza’s life is turning into a spiraling adventure. Urged on by threats, a race against the clock and love, Aza and her newfound companion, Edric, race around the world trying to free the trapped African gods and goddesses before the Greeks can stop them and keep control of the power they stole long ago.

This book is a fun and captivating story that brought a piece of the world's mythology to life in a fantastic and clever way. Not only was it well written, When We Were Gods brought knowledge to its readers about the different types of mythology, and opened a channel to confront themes of trust, respect, intelligence and problem solving, subtly showing the value and importance of such. It offered a multitude of cliffhangers at the ends of chapters, only making you want to read more. Suffice to say, When We Were Gods is a five star read. I look forward to reading more mythology inspired books by Briana Brooks.
