Whispers in the Waters by Sarah Chislon is part of the Blood of the Fae series. Jessa’s childhood was spent being taught by her aunt how to properly behave as a lady. But she has a secret that is very unladylike. She spends her days letting herbalism consume her life as a way to pretend she can’t hear mysterious voices. Concealing her unique ability becomes more difficult when she must visit a town that puts her into the crosshairs of the fae but it's the only way to protect her aunt from dangerous attacks. She finds herself torn between keeping her abilities secret and protecting those she cares about even if it means putting herself at risk.

The background of the story is an important element of Jessa’s journey because it is rooted in the idea of how ladies should behave. The style has a Victorian aesthetic with specific manners and attitudes based on high society concepts. Sarah Chislon successfully captures this genre through a lovely usage of language that spins lyrical phrases into rich visuals. This imagery creates a stunning world that draws you in through characters like Aunt Caris who follows societal rules and otherworldly ones like the voices Jessa hears. The details of the society also give you an understanding of her internal conflict between following what’s proper and being herself.

Chislon crafts a relatable journey for Jessa as circumstances push her into needing to make a choice and using her unique abilities to help those around her. It’s a beautiful arc that finds her growing from a little girl taught by her aunt how to behave to a young woman willing to risk everything. Herbalism is at the core of who Jessa is with several instances where she calls upon her skills, including helping an injured cat. This story has an element of mystery that adds a touch of suspense to Jessa’s journey which comes with intriguing twists and secrets. A beautifully written story, Whispers in the Waters is a fantasy journey that blends magic, a lovely setting, layered characters, and a strong voice.
