Lottie loves to wander on the beach with her puppy, picking up shells and, often enough, cleaning up the trash. One day, she discovers an abandoned pup in one of the trash piles. She tells her puppy that they must try to find a home for it. Carefully, she lifts the pup into her wagon and trots around town asking people if they will adopt the abandoned pup. She asks everyone she meets, “Who will care for this little lost pup? Will you care for a little lost pup?” She meets with enthusiastic interest until they see the pup and then they turn down the offer they almost gave. Not to be discouraged, Lottie finds someone on the beach who knows just what to do, because the pup is not a dog puppy. In fact, there are many sea animals whose babies are called pups. What type of sea animal pup is this?
Sarah Hoppe’s picture book story, Who Will? Will You?, is a charming story about a little girl and her growing passion for preserving sea life. The story is well told with a clever plot. There is a lot of dialogue, including the girl’s oft-repeated mantra, “Who will….? Will you….?” Milanka Reardon’s colorful illustrations help carry the story along. The end of the book contains a lot of useful and interesting information about sea animals and their habitats. The author organizes the useful information, following the key questions asked by would-be adopters, questions about the pup’s unique characteristics. It’s presented in a manner to help the young reader not only learn but also do a little sleuthing to decide what type of pup this is. A great way to bring awareness to young readers of the importance of our sea world and the animals that live in the sea.
