Witness to a Prosecution: The Myth of Michael Milken by Richard V. Sandler is a work of nonfiction in the subgenres of business and finance, autobiography, and legal issues. It is best suited for the general adult reading audience. In his first tell-all book covering the events that happened in the 1980s, Sandler explains his role as a personal lawyer working for the defense of Michael Milken when the government decided to investigate this highly successful businessman. Sandler details everything in the case made against Milken, especially the gross mistreatment, scrutiny, and injustice he faced and the myriad of reasons behind why it happened.

As someone who had never heard of Michael Milken or the criminal and legal investigation before reading this work, I had a surprisingly good time getting into every little detail of the case and its repercussions and implications on future legalities in business. Author Richard V. Sandler has a knack for accessibility, and it was fascinating to see such an accomplished legal mind open his world to every reader and allow us in without the need for huge chunks of jargon or too much technical knowledge that would alienate the audience. Instead, we’re presented with a very emotional human interest story at the heart of the legalities, and this sense of injustice and governmental critique creates a strong core narrative that helps us stay invested in the facts. Overall, Witness to a Prosecution will appeal to both the business-minded and newcomers to the genre who wish to understand more about the cruel world of financial crime and governmental investigation.
