Writing Mr. Right is a contemporary romance by Abigail Drake. After repeated writer’s block and a few scandals in the romance community, Liberty Day’s agent dumped her on the same day that her husband committed suicide. Her author friends weren’t having any better luck with their writing or in their marriages, so they each wrote a list of the qualities they hoped to find in their next romantic partner. They chose characteristics they thought they wanted in a partner, but they fell for men that fitted another friend’s description. Even though the men were different from the ones they thought they wanted, everything seemed to be going well until their desires conflicted with the lives they had built.

Abigail Drake has weaved together characters in a way that shouldn’t work but has turned the story into a brilliant romance with a hint of mystery. Readers will embrace each of the characters as they relate to at least one of them. The reader feels every emotion from shock and hurt to desire and happiness as Drake describes unlikely romances that seem to appear almost magically. The sprinkling of book descriptions and titles through the pages could be ideas for more novels by Drake and will encourage readers to devour more of her work. Even though it’s fiction, the book serves as a good lesson to move past your mistakes and reach for something good, even though it doesn’t fit into your idea of what you thought you wanted. Writing Mr. Right is a great choice for readers who love romances with multi-layered characters and depth.

Libby and her friends, Nicky, Jess, and Eliza, are established romance writers specializing in different subgenres. Yet, their personal lives have long lost the magic they write about in their books. On one drunken night during a particularly rough patch, they decide to pen a description of their dream men. Surprisingly, in the following days, each meets a new man. However, it doesn’t take long to realize their choices have become scrambled. Not one of them is with the guy who fits the description of their ideal man. As the four friends deal with the newcomers, it seems to strain their friendship. How will the romance writers fare? To know more, read Writing Mr. Right by Abigail Drake.

Writing Mr. Right is an engaging contemporary romance at the outset, but I was amazed at its hidden depths. Akin to women’s fiction, Abigail Drake highlights the strong bonds between the four friends and gives each a satisfying character arc that raises them to their full potential. The mystery woven into the storyline and several well-chosen action scenes make this a romantic suspense novel. This genre-defying novel has something for each reader. I loved how Drake alternated between POVs to allow ample insight into the lives of each friend, yet this strategy never hindered the progress of the main storyline. Each had a unique story, struggling with their battles that took a toll on the new lives they envisioned. I rooted for each woman, sometimes indulging in their little fantasies and sometimes yearning to see them succeed despite all the obstacles. I recommend Writing Mr. Right to all romance lovers out there.

Writing Mr. Right by Abigail Drake is a contemporary romance novel about four best friends in the romance writing circles. Libby Day, Nicky Knightly, Jess Harper, and Eliza Pembroke have been writing about romance for years, but neither of them was happy in love. When Libby’s husband dies tragically, the four friends get together for a weekend. When it becomes obvious that neither of them has been with the right man, they decide to write their Mr. Right. Libby wants a rock star, Nicky a motorcycle-riding bad boy, Jess a law enforcing cop, and Eliza a kilt-wearing Scottish man. Soon their wishes start coming true, but not in the way they wished for. Is Mr. Right not exactly who they wished for? Or will he be even better than that?

The book starts with Praise for the Author, and I have to say Abigail Drake deserves all the praise she has received and more. Writing Mr. Right is an excellent read, and Abigail Drake is an extraordinary romance writer. From start to finish, Writing Mr. Right had me hooked. This novel includes humor, romance, and even a little mystery. The characters were extremely relatable, which made Writing Mr. Right even more enjoyable. I fell in love with this book and believe that I now am hooked on romance novels even more. From now on I will be on the lookout for all of Abigail Drake’s books.
