Xalien the Purple Alien: Xalien Goes to School by Michelle Path is an adorable book for kids in grades K-3. Xalien is a friendly girl alien who visits Jessica and her friends and accompanies them to school. Xalien isn’t used to riding on a school bus because on her planet she rides caterpillar-like creatures through underground tunnels. At lunchtime, Xalien wants to eat flowers and leaves instead of the sandwiches and fruit that the other children are eating. When it’s time for the children to write the alphabet, Xalien shows Adam the way it’s written on her planet. When Jessica and her friends go to feed the fish, Xalien the Purple Alien starts to eat the fish instead, making for an interesting lesson in what it means to feed the fish and not make the fish her food.

Young kids will enjoy being read the story of Xalien the Purple Alien: Xalien Goes to School by Michelle Path. It’s interesting because it involves an alien, one of kids’ favorite colors (purple) and a whole host of everyday events to which kids can relate. It also teaches kids about accepting and understanding people from different cultures and environments as they accept their new alien friend, Xalien, and hope to see her again soon. The main character, Xalien the Purple Alien, is very likeable and some of the innocent things she does differently from human children are funny, which will make the young audience for this book laugh. This is a good book for parents or teachers to read to young ones.
