Yellowstone Shifters by Greg Marchand is a horror novel set in the early 2000s. After watching a friend get mauled to death by a bear and losing the woman he loves, Kyle Fenn has no idea his life is going to sink even deeper into despair. One fateful night and an ancient cave full of strange bones will change his life forever. Meanwhile, Henry Redmoon, a native American ranger, holds a dangerous family secret. When strange yet familiar murders begin to take place around Yellowstone Park, his worst nightmare is realized. A rogue shifter is killing people and he wonders if his family has anything to do with it. One thing is plain to him, though; the famous archaeologist Dr. Donnaan MacLeod is knee-deep in whatever trouble is afoot.

Greg Marchand mixes horror with great characterization so that the story is not just scary but deeply emotional. Kyle started out as an unlikely hero but I’m glad he grew so much through the story. Leaving behind past failures is not an easy thing to do but rising up despite that is even harder to do. I liked Kyle because he had so many flaws but strived to do the right thing in a difficult situation. That is what made the story so gripping. Add in the romance and the other subplots and it was a tale full of adventurous diversity. The author did a great job of concealing the real villain - it was a great twist. The myth of the were-shifter has been around for centuries and I must say Yellowstone Shifters is among the best in terms of execution. I almost feel like if I went to visit Yellowstone I may just spot a shifter. Fans of Teen Wolf will love this book.
