Zan’s Quest: The Chandaran Chronicles, Book One is a young adult epic fantasy written by Daniel Bryant. The inhabitants of Chandara, a small planet, live on its sole continent, which is surrounded by ocean. The feline Saberons share this planet with the humanoid quasi, and they have established a unique bonding system which has enabled the predatory cats and the humanoids to live in a synergistic harmony. Zan and his family are Pantheran; their bonding partners are Panthers. When a quasi is born, they are immediately matched with their Saberon bond mate. The two instantly become inseparable and telepathically linked, and the quasi’s body adopts some feline characteristics. Zan’s bond mate is Lexa, the daughter of Zan’s father’s bond mate, Lexus Prime. After they were bonded, the coloring of the two soon deepened into a dark, burnt orange color, which, with their accompanying white blazes, marked them as being quite special. No bonded pair had had that coloring since the First Bonded Pair hundreds of years before. When Zan and Lexa were nearing their majority, which occurs at the age of 16, they and their families were attacked by strange metal globes which released a soporific gas. Lexus Prime was able to remain conscious long enough to remove Zan from the gases, taking him high up into a tree and lashing him in place. When Zan awoke, he was determined to rescue Lexa and his family from their captors.

Daniel Bryant’s young adult epic fantasy, Zan’s Quest:The Chandaran Chronicles, Book One, is an intense and absorbing coming of age tale. I was intrigued by the way the inhabitants of Chandara resolved the conflicts which threatened to destroy their civilizations and fascinated by the resulting pair-bonding of feline to humanoid. Zan’s mission is an especially difficult one as he has been separated from the one being who makes him complete for the first time since his birth. How he is able to learn to function without Lexa and find a way to save his family makes for an original and fast-paced adventure and quest story combined. Bryant weaves into his tale the differing cultures Zan encounters during his search as well as his meeting with Max, a most enigmatic and mysterious Panther, who becomes his quest companion. I had a grand time reading Zan’s Quest. It’s highly recommended.
