Zapped by Prudence Breitrose is an entertaining middle-grade story about a boy named Joe and a gerbil named Sophie. When Joe’s father invents the nanozap, a device that can shrink anything and later regrow it, his family becomes rich and moves to a mansion. Little do they know that a group of gerbils move with them, determined to use the nanozap to make furniture and clothing their size and so become better respected in the rodent world. For the gerbils to do this, however, they’ll need Joe and his thumbs to help build and operate a portable nanozap, but will he be willing to help, especially when their plan involves luring him into a trap and zapping him? And what will they shrink if he does?

Zapped by Prudence Breitrose is an absolute must-read with an intriguing plot and unique characters. The story is fun and fast-paced, with lots of surprising plot twists and interesting problems for the characters to face so that there is never a dull moment—or page—when reading this book. I liked that the story is told in first person perspective by both Joe and Sophie so that the reader can experience both sides. I loved the way the two narrations sometimes interact, as it gives a greater sense of the friendship between the two characters, in addition to being fun and making the writing style unique and memorable. It’s easy to track which character is telling the story because of the cute illustrations at the start of each section of either Joe or Sophie. Joe and Sophie are both likable characters readers will root for, as are the other supporting characters, and I think everyone is going to love gerbils after reading this book, regardless of whether they have clothes. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and I would recommend it.
