Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were locked out of your home at night? That’s what happened to Zorro, the Boston Terrier. He was saying goodbye to a friend and was distracted by a grasshopper when he heard his parents close the doors for the night. They didn’t hear him when he barked and jumped at the door. It was starting to rain, so he needed shelter for the night. And so begins his nighttime adventure, a journey of discovery as he visits one animal family after another until he can find a safe, dry place to sleep. He can’t reach the owl’s nest, and the mouse’s home is too small. Where do you think he’ll spend the night? Find out in Zorro the Boston Terrier by Paola Kay and Shawn P. Cooney.

Paola Kay and Shawn P. Cooney’s picture book, Zorro the Boston Terrier: Accidentally Locked Out, is a clever way to introduce young readers to different animal families and their homes. The plot follows Zorro as he searches for a place to spend the night. He meets one animal family after another and learns about their homes, only to discover that most of these animals live in homes unsuitable for him to share. The language is simple for young readers to follow, and how the author introduces each animal family will make young readers want to learn more about different animals. In addition, the illustrations are intriguing and add a little zest to the story. Zorro is a brave little dog who inspires young readers to overcome their fears and find something exciting and lovable about everything they encounter.
