Mukade Island is the story of Jack, who suddenly finds himself on a strange island in the middle of an orange ocean after he made a wish. In his world, everyone gets to make one wish when they are 15 and the wish will be granted. Apparently someone did not like his wish and decided it was better for him to disappear. There are a few other kids on the island and they are in two different groups; the good ones (which rescue Jack) and the bad one with their slaves. There are also poisonous centipedes called Mukade (which is the Japanese word for poisonous) that come out at night. The kids live on boiled slugs and there is a legend that a boy called "Jack Outrigger" would come and save them. Jack's last name isn't Outrigger but he seems to be the one who can make a change: he can talk to the purple bats, he discovers a useful treasure, and he doesn't just want to give up.

Nikki Bennett manages to keep the reader interested in what happens on the next page throughout the whole book. Why are those kids on that island and who is behind putting them on what seems like a different planet? And who has the power to grant all wishes anyway? Jack seems wise beyond his years and sometimes acts a bit too mature for his age but that's probably the reason why he is the hero of the story and the one to make a difference. The characters are all unique and you'll like some and hate some. You'll want to grab the next book in the series right after you finished this book because it's the kind of story that you simply want to go on and on and on!
