Ratpaths by Angelika Rust takes place around the Renaissance times, in Istonnia. The plot follows a young man named Nivvo, who is a skilled thief. During one of his errands, he overhears something that could overthrow the current ruler and change his life forever. Having his comfortable life ripped away from him at a young age, there's nothing more that Nivvo wants than to protect his sister and those who suffer. Nivvo must decide if he's willing to give up his life of thievery and potentially risk his life to overthrow the Ravires.

Angelika Rust weaves an enchanting tale about a thief willing to risk everything to overthrow the government he hates so much. The book grabbed my attention from the first page, with a unique plot and interesting characters. Nivvo is a witty twenty-year-old that lightens the mood in a somewhat dark plot. One can't help but root for him on his endeavors. The manner of speaking is different and feels very foreign at first; however, after reading a few chapters, the way the characters speak becomes part of the charm of the book. It makes becoming part of the story easier.

The book was around 190 pages and very interesting to read. I seemed to finish the book too quickly and wished for more. I'd like to see the characters, settings, and plot in more detail, to get fully involved in the story. I fully enjoyed the story and I can only hope the sequel will come out soon.
