Keeping Score by Jamie Deise tells the story of single mum Shannon Stevens whose son wants to try out for the local baseball team. She thinks it will be a good way to spend some time with her son Sam over the holidays but does not reckon on the competition. Unfortunately, the worst of the competition has nothing to do being on the field. The parents of the boys trying out are crazy, believing that their sons are the top players and that Sam shouldn't even be there. Sam loses out and ends up playing on the worst baseball team in town while Shannon’s best friend, Jennifer, does her best to get her own son onto the best team. Unfortunately, Shannon finds herself falling in love with the coach of The Saints, the best team, while her son’s team fails every week to make the score. Even her ex-husband gets involved and Shannon has to try to keep things on an even keel, while doing her best not to fall into the trap of becoming one of “those” mums!
Keeping Score by Jamie Deise is a wonderful novel, a story of love, despair, desire, and hope all mixed into one. It’s humorous and serious at the same time. I found it to be an easy read, each chapter flowing naturally into the next. No awkward pauses, no thinking, 'What did I miss there?' It all fits perfectly. Jamie has obviously done her homework in this subject and it really shows in the way she weaves her tale! Hats off to Jamie Deise, fab story!
