Tory Johnson, a Good Morning America contributor, can now add bestselling author to her list of accomplishments. Her book The Shift: How I Finally Lost Weight and Discovered a Happier Life is not a diet plan or book. The Shift is a change in attitude when it comes to eating. Tory had been overweight most of her life and she allowed that extra weight to control her. She avoided school dances and other social functions. A discussion with Barbara Ferdida drove home the fact that Tory had to lose weight or her job could be in jeopardy. Two years ago Tory lost sixty pounds. How did she do it? By changing her attitude when it came to eating. Among the things she learned: to make better food choices, to eat smaller amounts, to eat slower, to empty her cupboards, and to observe how thin people eat.
Kudos to Tory Johnson for her change in attitude and will-power. The Shift is easy to read and understand. It is more of a memoir than a diet book. The reader will find encouragement and hope within the pages of The Shift. However, there are also a few things that made me uncomfortable. In a discussion with her daughter, she suggested the girl should lose five pounds, leaving her daughter in tears. When I was a teen this would have left me in tears, too. I’m glad her weight loss method worked for her, but it wasn’t the healthiest method of losing weight and it isn’t for everyone. My copy of The Shift is audio format and Tory Johnson is the reader. She has a warm and comforting manner. I enjoyed listening to her share her weight loss journey.
