Christianity and space travel or science fiction are typically ideas that are mutually exclusive, at least in my book. The realm of space exploration and discovery usually pushes the boundary of disproving Christian beliefs, so they tend to be a topic not much used together. In Richard Collin’s new graphic novel, that is the exact stereotype that is being broken. Raegan & RJ In Space: An Earth Mini-Adventure Satellite Rescue is the story of the first Christians who left earth to colonize the stars. Fifty families originally founded Hope, Tennessee and founded the Christian Space program. Now their kids are furthering their dreams and are cleared for space status! The graphic novel follows the kids and their family as they grow into being space commanders for the Christian Space Program.
I loved that there was a lot of science and astronomy involved in this. There was a look into the surrounding stars and galaxies that was pretty cool. The artwork was done by D.L. Maffett and it had a cool and very comic book style to it with notes of being a kind of coloring book. This style makes Raegan & RJ In Space ideal for children of younger ages, perhaps six through ten. The content is about that age level as well, with lots of overemphasized excitement and super-sized faces and objects which lend itself to being a children’s book. Knowing that this is a Christian book, some amount of Christian messaging and language is to be expected. This could cause a bit of a harsh jive with some non-Christian readers, but the messaging was subtle enough to come off as idealistic instead of preachy. Overall, a cute and fun book for kids who love space.
