In Mind Game by Trina Chako, a young girl, Sucheta Sharma, witnesses her family's murder and many years later returns to discover who murdered her family. While this may seem like a simple plot, I think it really works. Readers want to know that all things work out in the end and that a person can right the wrongs of the past. So I liked the premise of Sucheta coming home and refusing to stop until she had the answers that she so desperately needed. Even when no one else believes her or wants to support her or asks her to stop because she is endangering herself. No one else has the drive to reopen this case and see it all the way through because no one else has suffered as much loss as Sucheta.
I also like the idea of the female heroine on her own trying to solve a deadly and dangerous case. There is something about a young woman searching for the truth that makes us want to root for her, almost like she is the underdog. That creates a special connection with the reader and it's a wise choice by the author to make her vulnerable and sometimes overwhelming sad about the loss of her parents, but then also tough as nails and determined to solve the crime and avenge her parents.
