Maisy is a junior detective; junior because of her young age. But she is very astute and aware of her surroundings and very thorough in her investigations. Maisy and the Mystery Manor is the third book in the Maisy Files series and it reads quite well on its own. Maisy and her best friend and fellow junior detective, Veronica, are in for a real treat as Maisy’s parents have arranged for a weekend get-away at Mystery Manor, and an opportunity to solve a real mystery. Only, the mystery presented, the case of the missing tiara, is not the real mystery at all. It’s the ghost.
Elizabeth Woodrum has created another exciting Maisy adventure that will appeal to young readers and young sleuths. She has written a story with real-life characters and seemingly real situations. Maisy is a very loveable character, as is her friend Veronica. The descriptive passages help lead the reader through the mystery, and the private peeks into Maisy’s sleuthing file notes help the reader relate to the young detective and how her mind works. By adding a second mystery to the first, the author creates more drama and excitement, allowing the reader to actually feel the fear of the young detectives, because, yes, even though the young detectives are clever and can solve mysteries, they are still young and do demonstrate fear in different, unusual situations.
This is an exciting read and will certainly be appreciated by young readers, even those who don’t aspire to be detectives. The main character, Maisy, is definitely more realistic than Nancy Drew and the situations more interesting. A great read and an excellent middle grade mystery novel.
