Contemplations by Lisa M. Gott is an anthology of short fiction and poetry. The first piece in this anthology is the poem ‘Broken’. It’s a frank evocation of loss and separation between two people. It is just a short poem, but it lingered in my mind long after I finished reading because of its potent honesty. The next piece is the short story ‘Lost’, where a woman deeply reflects on her true self. A new bride buries a painful truth on her wedding day in ‘The Things You Keep to Yourself’, and one of my favorites is ‘Invisible’, a paranormal tale with a bittersweet ending.
Contemplations switches back and forth between poems and short stories. The title for Gott’s anthology is fitting - readers will find it hard not to ponder profoundly on the poems and stories. It has the whole package: lost love, secrets, abuse, the afterlife, revenge, betrayal, and much more. Some of the stories are quite dark and disturbing as they deal with real problems in our society. However, they are balanced by others that focus on healing, inspiration, and reflection on life such as ‘These Are The Days’, where a mother cherishes the memories of her late daughter.
Gott’s prose is faultless and the characters’ emotions are easy to relate to. They are real and will remind readers of some people they know. ‘My Vintage Rose’ is the longest and the last part in the collection, a beautiful and romantic story. Simply put, this is a thought provoking and engrossing anthology from Gott.
