Grumble Bluff by Karen Bessey Pease is a young adult coming of age story. Katherine Anne Kirby can't connect with her family and she's bullied at school. If there is one place that she does enjoy, it is Grumble Bluff, a forested area with a flowing stream that becomes Kathy's own little oasis. One day Kathy rescues Greta, another girl getting picked on by the bullies at school. She invites her to Grumble Bluff and the two start a wonderful friendship. Kathy realizes that her life might not be that bad, as Greta has many more problems than Kathy does, including a very sick father. But in Grumble Bluff, none of that matters and the two children are free and safe and happy. What started as a simple intervention to stop bullying is now a full blown, life long friendship, and the two girls are happy for once in their lives. As long as they stay in Grumble Bluff.
Grumble Bluff is a very sweet tale about friendship. I loved the title and the name of the woods the girls play in. I think every young person should have some safe place that they can go to and get away from their problems, so this is a very relevant story. Karen Bessey Pease does a nice job of writing about a hidden oasis that many readers will want to visit some day. And the descriptions are very beautiful and realistic!
