Blood and Secrets by T.Q. Bernier intertwines the lives of two women in the Danish Virgin Islands on the cusp of World War I. Lily has no memory of her life before Alexander pulled her aboard his ship on the journey from Denmark to the Islands. She quickly forges a relationship with Alex’s family, especially his cousin, Cassandra, who is returning to the Islands for the reading of her father’s will. Lily struggles with not knowing who she is, while trying to understand her growing feelings for Alex. Cassandra fights to repress memories of a spoiled relationship with a man on St. John. With foul deeds afoot, will the women manage to find a happily ever after amongst the chaos?
Blood and Secrets by T.Q. Bernier was truly an enjoyable read. I could not put the book down once I started, determined to know what happened to both Lily and Cassandra. I found the setting in the Virgin Islands refreshing, not a locale often explored in historical romance novels. The plot kept me wondering what would happen next, and I found myself rooting for both Alex and Lily, and Zack and Cassandra. I loved the descriptions of the beaches and plantations, hearkening back to a simpler time. Miss Bernier’s prose flowed, much like the oceans in her novel. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who wants a tropical romance, filled with unique characters and exciting plot twists. Blood and Secrets certainly does not disappoint, and I eagerly look forward to reading other novels by T.Q. Bernier.
