The Soul of My Son: A Grieving Father's Journey from Skeptic to Psychic Medium is a non-fiction self-help book on grief and bereavement written by Steven Joseph. Joseph and his wife, Karen, had their family planned carefully. Their first child would be walking and potty trained before they had another child, and they stuck to their plan. Drew was born 20 months after his older brother, Eric. He had bright red hair, something no one had expected, except for Karen, who had actually dreamed repeatedly of giving birth to a red-haired infant throughout her pregnancy. Joseph was skeptical of all things spiritual and didn't really pay that any mind. He had had enough of spirituality in Catholic school. His attitudes on spirituality would drastically change after Drew committed suicide when he was 20 years old. As any parent would be, Joseph was overcome by grief and the need to understand why his son would have taken his own life. His journey to understanding led to an entire sea-change in his philosophy of life and opened up a new life's purpose for himself.
Steven Joseph's non-fiction self-help book on grief and bereavement, The Soul of My Son: A Grieving Father's Journey from Skeptic to Psychic Medium, is a deeply moving and fascinating account. Joseph's biographical account of his son, Drew, is beautifully and succinctly told, and I could easily envision this splendid athlete and all-around good and gentle giant in my mind. While I knew from the title that he took his life, hearing the actual details was sobering and sad. When Joseph speaks of the way Drew initiated communication with him after death, I could feel the burgeoning energy and enthusiasm of the author as he helps others deal with the loss of their children, and take some comfort in his own understanding of why Drew died. Along the way, I learned quite a bit about mediums and clairvoyance, which are subjects I had always been curious about. This book is a marvelous introduction to the subject for anyone who’s ever wondered about spirituality and channeling, but it’s especially recommended for those who are suffering from bereavement. There's such comfort and compassion emanating from this author throughout his story. The Soul of My Son: A Grieving Father's Journey from Skeptic to Psychic Medium is most highly recommended.
