This touching book of poetry is written for a Christian audience; each work is followed by a correlating scriptural text. Okisha Jackson has penned an original book of poetry in First Person: Supernatural Interviews, A Poetry Book. The topics are varied and relevant in today’s modern world, where too much emphasis is placed on a person’s looks, clothing and possessions, and too little placed on strong moral values. Several poems are actually interviews with the author and emotions, such as Fear and Love. There is a theme of non-acceptance and low self-esteem in several poems. The titles themselves are telling: Light Momma Dark Daughter; Church Chicks; Divorce; First to Cry. The final work, entitled Music, is certainly heartwarming.
Although many poems in this book originate from the author’s own life experience as a woman of color, the themes will resonate with many people. The author’s Christian belief system is interwoven with her struggles, showing how hope and faith can aid a person to rise above these challenges. In First Person: Supernatural Interviews, A Poetry Book, Okisha Jackson skillfully demonstrates the blending of these two factions. Ms. Jackson is a creative and imaginative writer, bringing light into difficult situations. While each individual work can stand on its own, it is when the reader integrates all the stories into one piece of work, that the true messages are understood. This book is thought-provoking; it should be savored and not read quickly. The poetry is encouraging to all people who struggle to fit into a culture of materialism and vanity.
