"Ticket to Hollywood", the second book in an eleven part comedy series by the late Gary Reilly, follows the mis-adventures of Brendon Murphy or “Murph”, an unpublished author/cab driver from Denver, Colorado, who makes up for his lack of motivation and social skills with an abundance of dry wit. In this story, Murph finds himself becoming far too involved for his liking in the life of an aspiring young actress, when she forgets her purse in the back of his cab. Things start getting out of hand when the asphalt hero tries, against his better judgment, to return the purse in person, only to find that the girl has disappeared. He was the last person to see her and the police want to see him. Because of all this, Murph loses his job, ends up starting a production company and flying to Hollywood in an attempt to sort the whole mess out.
This book is enormously funny and leaves you wanting to spend more time with the grumpy and sarcastic but very likable protagonist. Gary Reilly wrote over twenty novels, eleven of those being Murph novels, without going to a publisher or having an agent, wanting first to build up and refine his body of work before releasing it to the public. Sadly he passed away in 2011 before getting the chance to see any of his novels printed. Gladly, they are now being published and I'm very much looking forward to joining Murph for more adventurous ordeals with the release of the third book in the series, "The Heart of Darkness Club".
