An Appearance of Goodness: A Pride and Prejudice Mystery Variation tells the story of what happens after Elizabeth Bennet rejects Mr. Darcy. If you loved Pride and Prejudice, this is a must-read! Heather Moll breathes life into these classic characters and gives us a story with Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth being thrown together for a holiday at Mr. Darcy’s home, Pemberley. Has Elizabeth forgiven Mr. Darcy or will their stay at Pemberley be agony? As they contemplate whether the other still loves them, tragedy strikes and there is a death at Pemberley. With romance, drama, and a murder mystery, there is something for everyone. Moll explores another side, a kinder side, to the closed-off Mr. Darcy so get ready to have your heart warmed!
Heather Moll has created a story that made me grin with glee, cringe with second-hand embarrassment and hold my breath in suspense. I can’t ask more from a book. An Appearance of Goodness fits into the style of Pride and Prejudice perfectly but retains its individual voice. This ideal balance allows it to feel like a fresh story with the familiar and beloved characters, instead of an attempt to simply imitate Austen’s writing. It is this aspect that I loved most about Moll’s book. Besides a page-turning plot, Moll’s book is filled with colorful descriptions and vibrant characters. Each character is fleshed out into a relatable person with their own voice and I enjoyed this. Moll’s knowledge of the period shines through and makes it feel like you are in the 1800s. I couldn’t put it down.
