Ashes in a Coconut by Bo Kearns is a debut novel set in Indonesia in the 1980s. A colorful and exotic novel, this a taut thriller with a plot steeped in betrayal and corruption. The characters are wonderfully written by an author with a great command of the English language, including very likable and relatable characters living real lives with real problems. This is a descriptive novel that puts you firmly in the center of the story, feeling it, living it. You can feel the emotion coming off the pages as you follow two main characters in two very different stories that ultimately come together in a tale of redemption. An excellent first novel, perfectly suited to those who love thrillers and stories of travel. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
