Amber Elmore has offered young readers considerable food for thought in her latest book Betsy Beansprout, Camping Guide. Betsy is a seasoned outdoors girl and she takes the reader on a tour of what will be needed for a fun and safe campout. Betsy describes where she will be camping and she invites the reader along as she prepares for her excursion. Betsy describes the various places that children may camp and she talks about some of her own experiences. Children might laugh about Betsy getting attacked by a bird but they will surely pay attention when Betsy talks about preparing for the potential presence of bears in the woods.

The camping suggestions are put forth in a manner that will appeal to children without scaring them. The illustrations by Josh Hickey are delightful. There are lists of things to take in order to make camping safe and fun. There are suggestions on what to do once the camping experience has commenced. Betsy asks the reader what he or she would take on the trip and what kind of stories they might want to tell around a campfire. She also warns of campfire dangers. There are typical recipes in the book and children can help to assemble the ingredients and then help to prepare the food. Betsy encourages young readers to make up songs and to be original in planning a trip they would enjoy. Most of all, Betsy wants children to put down electronic devices and just get out into nature and begin to explore!
