Brake Check is a work of fiction in the horror, thriller, and recent historical subgenres. The work is best suited to mature readers owing to scenes of graphic violence and gore, as well as dark adult themes and explicit discussion of grisly topics. Penned by author Gitte Tamar, the story delves into the tumultuous life of Loretta in 1972, North Carolina. Discovering her partner Rut's infidelity while she's in labor, Loretta vows that their child, Rich Richardson, will not repeat his father's mistakes but will rise to become a professional race car driver. However, her dreams of a better future are quickly shattered when she's forced to return home to Rut. Determined to secure fame and fortune for her son, Loretta makes impulsive choices that set off a chain of events with far-reaching consequences.

Author Gitte Tamar uses every glorious trick in the horror playbook, and then invents a few, to create a gripping experience, immersing readers in Loretta's world filled with betrayal, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of success. The vivid storytelling and well-chosen descriptive lexis capture the atmosphere of 1970s North Carolina perfectly, bringing the characters and their struggles to life and matching each emotive scene to the mood of its setting. The narrative's twists and turns kept me engaged until the very end, and the exploration of the dark underbelly of fame adds layers of tension and thrills that sink deeper into the reader’s mind, intensifying the high-stakes horror moments all the more. Overall, Brake Check is a thrilling read that combines elements of drama, suspense, and tragedy, leaving a lasting impact on the reader, and I would certainly recommend it to horror fans everywhere.
