Don Gutteridge’s Constable Garrett and the Dead Ringer is one of those books that grabs readers’ attention and pulls them in to the point that they feel helpless, unable to leave the story or the characters behind, a well-crafted blend of crime, investigation, and mystery. During the horseshoe tournament, a man who would help Port Eddy win against the neighboring Petroleum City is killed, and no one has a clue about who did it. But when a friend’s father is apprehended, Garrett knows he is dealing with something bigger, even more sinister than what he bargained for. In a rush of unstoppable action, he sets out to find the killer and perhaps save the life of an innocent man. Does he have what it takes to fight a killer who is as deadly as he is ingenious?
The words of the porter to Stan Garrett, after giving him instructions on how to get to Port Eddy, constitute the warning that captures the intense action taking place in Constable Garrett and the Dead Ringer: “But don’t blink or you may miss it.” And yes, the reader will find it hard to take their eyes off the pages of this breezy read. Don Gutteridge creates characters that are memorable and a setting that readers will love to inhabit. The action starts with the first line, and the intensity grows from page to page with the reader’s increasing curiosity. The plot is perfect, designed with numerous twists and surprising turns. Constable Garrett is a rounded character, dealing with conflicts at different levels, an intelligent, determined character. The writing is impeccably good, punctuated with engaging dialogue and vivid prose, not to mention the witticism and powerful humor that will elicit smiles and laughter from readers. A book to read for the best entertainment. Absorbing.
