In Russ Linton’s Crimson Son, Spencer Harrington is the 19-year-old son of Crimson Mask, the world’s most powerful Augment or superhuman soldier. For his family’s safety, they often moved from one city to another, to avoid being a target for his father’s enemies. Unfortunately, Crimson Mask’s nemesis, the Black Beetle, successfully kidnapped Spencer's mother two years ago. Since then, Spencer is confined to Icehole, his father’s Arctic bunker. In order to escape from boredom and provide an outlet for his desperate wish to save his mother, Spencer fiddles with the equipment in the bunker every day. When the Icehole comes under attack by a rampaging robot, Spencer is forced to flee into a dangerous world of villains, government conspiracies and top secret facilities.

Crimson Son is a superhero story with a heavy human emotional issue. Spencer’s relationship with his father is complicated, trapping him between his father’s desire to protect him while saving the world at the same time, and Spencer’s own frustration with his father’s constant absence in his life. His desire to save his mother adds another stress to their relationship. Spencer has no power himself, but he is skilled enough to protect himself and I think this is a charming facet of this young character. This also makes him a somewhat younger version of Batman to me (minus Batman’s lack of humor), proving that a superhero doesn't necessarily need superpowers, even though it is a vital aspect. Simply put, this is an entertaining read that deftly puts forward a fresh perspective on the superhero theme.
