Olivia Brophie and the Sky Island by Christopher Tozier is a delightful story for children, filled with adventure and whimsy. Olivia has accidentally frozen the entire world's water and, along with that, she finds out that her uncle and aunt have been kidnapped by the Wardenclyffe thugs. Now she has to undo the damage she caused. She travels across America with Hoolie, the black bear. On their journey, they come across an old civilization. Running parallel to the story is also the tale of Doug and Gnat who are drawn into the world of Junonia. As Doug works hard to document the discovery of giant tardigrades, his secret is found out by Larry Mutch. Doug finds himself caught in a battle to save Gnat and himself. Will Doug succeed in saving them and will Olivia be successful in her mission?
The story is exciting and fast paced with its twists and turns and daring adventures. The narration is wonderfully descriptive, enhancing the visual aspect of the book. The whimsical landscapes, fantasy, intrigue and adventure will keep children entertained until the very end. All the characters are well crafted and lively, adding to the excitement in the story. Two plots run parallel and they have been woven together effortlessly by the author, giving more punch to the story line.
The book is an engaging read and it introduces to young readers the realms of whimsy and magic which will enliven their reading experience. The intriguing plot has an air of uncertainty that keeps readers riveted to the story.
