Piano Paradises: My Piano Has A Big Secret by Elerya is an imaginative children’s book that should please early readers and keep them engaged. Six-year-old Chanelle loves to play instruments — flute, clarinet, and piano — but she really wants a piano of her own. She starts taking piano lessons, and when her piano teacher passes on, she leaves Chanelle a piano. As soon as Chanelle starts playing the piano, she realizes it’s magical! Chanelle is swept away to different places, worlds where frogs talk and there is lemonade snow. She also visits a pirate ship, tours a forest of mansions and elves, and practices dancing at a barnyard. The piano songs match the locations and what is going on in Chanelle’s life, so the story stays interesting throughout.
Piano Paradises: My Piano Has A Big Secret was fun to read. Chanelle’s character has so many adventures that a new reader should be able to keep reading with interest. I particularly liked the imaginative aspect of the story and the overall concept. However, I would have loved a bit more of a connection between Mrs. Adams, the piano teacher, and Chanelle. The story does move along at a good pace, and I really did enjoy it when the scenery changed as Chanelle played her piano. In particular, I liked the Halloween scene with the pirates. Elerya does a fine job of keeping the story going for young readers. The lessons were evident in the book, and children should be able to connect with the story. It was fun and magical!
