Poppy and Puff the Pandas Share Their Bamboos: A Story About Division by Two by Fynn Sor is an engaging story about mother and son pandas sharing their bamboo meal. Poppy the Panda wakes up and finds her son, Puff, missing. Soon she finds him on the treetop enjoying an amazing view of the whole clearing. There, Poppy locates a new forest of delicious bamboo to enjoy their breakfast. They begin their breakfast with two bamboo shoots, then four bamboo shoots, then six bamboo shoots, then eight bamboo shoots. Each time, Poppy splits the bamboo shoots in half, hence teaching young children about division by two.
The illustrations by Małgosia Zając are beautiful, capturing the close relationship between Poppy and Puff. The pictures have a simple feel in the colors used, black and white for the pandas and various shades of green for the bamboo. Poppy and Puff the Pandas Share Their Bamboos is part of the Happy Learning Math series, where numeracy and math concepts are introduced into the storyline to start learning math at a young age. This is definitely a fun way for both parents and children to learn together – step by step with cute animals as the main teachers. I also really liked the fun facts about giant pandas at the end of the story as so many new facts were introduced to readers. A fantastic introduction to math for the whole family!
