In Tom Sawyer Returns by E.E. Burke, Becky has not seen Tom for many years when he falls into her kitchen, injured and suffering from some memory loss. She doesn’t know whether to be happy, angry, or sad to see him but she nurses him back to health anyway. Becky’s father, the judge, is being accused of treason and is facing prison and hanging. Tom, still in love with Becky, offers his help and promises to make everything right. There is also Alfred, the man who wants to marry Becky, though Becky is not so sure. Jeff is her cousin whom she also feels the need to protect because she thinks he is doing illegal things and believes that her father is helping him, which is why he is in trouble with the law. Sid is Tom’s brother and the one who is responsible for the arrests. All of this combines in a tale of intrigue, excitement, and lots of twists and turns.
Tom Sawyer Returns by E.E. Burke was a wonderful reuniting of Tom and Becky Thatcher. I was hooked on Tom Sawyer Returns from the first word until the very last. There were so many things going on at once and I kept changing my mind about who was the good guy and who was bad, though I have to admit I couldn’t help but root for Tom. I love the style in which E.E. Burke told the story of a grown-up Tom and Becky. The story brought back happy hours of my youthful reading and presented a new Tom and Becky for me to enjoy in my older years. Tom Sawyer Returns is a wonderful book for young and old, male and female. This is a top-notch book that deserves lots of praise.
