The setting is the early 1900s. Arizona was still a territory. Hispanic Sheriff Paco Alaniz found keeping peace in Moon Valley an easy job until Don Santiago Castillo de Leon was murdered. The wealthy man was not well liked. Any number of citizens could have committed the crime. Suddenly, Sheriff Alaniz had his hands full: A priest offering “comfort” to the widow, Mormon polygamists, a gambler, and a mountain lion.
Lion’s Pride is so much more than a mystery. The question of who murdered Don Santiago Castillo de Leon is almost secondary to the relationships in this book. Jordan’s book is character driven. One of the issues addressed in this novel is obsessive religion. Jordan researched and studied various religious traditions. This book offers a look at faith and gender issues. The reader will find these issues relevant to our current society. Debbie Jordan author of Lion’s Pride is also the author of The World I Imagine.

Considering this book is placed in Arizona at completely different time, it holds much relevance of what is going on today. I can honestly say ther it only took me 2 days to read this book. It was written so well, using imagery that allowed me to see exactly what was going on. I will mosst likely read it again.
