Book Review
Are we a product of our early childhood experiences? Priscilla’s (Guinea) childhood was brutal. Her mother abused all of her children but seemed to receive great satisfaction from beating Priscilla. She even tried to drown her on one occasion. Priscilla was only eleven years old when she was raped for the first time. "Drunk for 27 Years" is not a pretty story; It is a gripping story. The reader witnesses abuse that no human should ever have to endure. Priscilla married and became a mother at a young age. She began her day with alcohol and as she grew older her dependence grew stronger.
Her son, Travis, called her Mommy Dearest because she reminded him of the movie. After comparing her to her own mother, Priscilla admitted she needed help. He checked her in to the First Step Rehabilitation Center in Houston Texas. With counseling and determination, Priscilla reclaimed her life. While at the center Priscilla turned her addiction over to the Lord. She knows that, “All things are possible through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.
In the back of this book the reader will find a list of places where they can seek help.
Cynthia Banks is a talented author. She brought Priscilla’s story to life. I felt as though I was watching Guinea grow up. I found myself emotionally involved in the story. I wanted to shout at Guinea, “Stop, you are ruining your life. You are worth so much more.” Banks does not use sensationalism to tell her story. She allows the plot to play out at its own speed. This book stayed with me long after I read the last page.
