Book Review
The Purples is the fictional story of an actual group. The Purple Gang was a pack of bootleggers and hijackers. They operated out of Detroit during the Roaring 20s. The group was led by Abe Bernstein. The majority of the members were young Jewish immigrants. It is reported their name came from a merchant that said, “They’re rotten, purple like the color of bad meat.”
In this fictional version of the story, Joe Bernstein is imprisoned for trying to rescue his innocent girl friend. The story begins when he is 19. The setting is Detroit during the prohibition years. Joe wants revenge. He plans to take control of the bootleg business between Canada and America.
This is a fast paced read. The author piqued my interest enough to do some research on the topic. What makes this book is the narrator. I could almost hear Joe’s voice. The author has a firm grasp on characterization. This is a historical legend come to life.
