Carlos and his friend Manuel visited a Wilson, a fortune teller in Brazil. Wilson warned the two men “be prepared to endure many hardships, including intensely hot and cold temperatures, hunger, heavy rains, snow storms, and other inclement weather. He also added that we’d be involved in a war, but without major consequences for us.” He gave the men a pendant that he promised would keep them safe as long as they wore it around their neck. “Never take it off.” Carlos didn’t take Wilson seriously.
Carlos and Manuel experienced the beauty of the countries and faced some exciting adventures along the trail. An accident along the trip left Carlos with a broken ankle. In Tucumán the men exchanged an interview for three nights in a hotel and a few meals. Everywhere they went they were publicized by reporters. At one point he was wanted by the FBI. He and Manuel went their separate ways, leaving Manuel to explore Europe on his own. In 1986 the two men were reunited.
Tracks and Horizons was originally written in Spanish. When Carlos expressed interest in having it translated to English for publication his son Ed volunteered to assist him. Carlos had shared many of his adventures with Ed throughout his childhood.
I love to travel but I’m not as daring as Carlos. I prefer to know where I’m going to be sleeping each night and where my next meal is coming from. I admire Carlos' spirit of adventure. I enjoyed this book but it would benefit from a bit more work. I believe this would be much better as an audio book where the reader could hear the tone of excitement, fear, and sense of awe. |
