Book Review
Reviewed by Karen P. for ReadersFavorite.com

Fallen From Grace by J.R. Lindermuth is just what the doctor ordered for a hot, summer afternoon accompanied by a cold glass of iced tea. Set in the late 19th century, Sheriff Sylvester Tilghman rarely has to exert himself in small town Arahpot, Pensylvania, as he tries to convince his girlfriend Lydia to marry him. As he begins the search for a deputy, the town experiences an epidemic of unnatural deaths. First a man is stabbed to death. Then, an obese man is poisoned, and the plot thickens as several suspects come to mind. Sheriff Tilghman uses a cautious and seemingly casual approach as he investigates clues to a mystery which becomes more intriguing with the passing of each day.

The sheriff's girlfriend has a cousin who vies for the position of deputy while he silently backs up Sheriff Tilghman, who appears to stumble into one nasty mess after another. With a laid-back sense of humor, author Lindermuth weaves an intricate plot which will have the reader speculating about the villain until the final pages.

The author's ability to develop his realistic and colorful characters is a definite strength. The reader will find him/herself laughing one minute and filled with tension the next. Not only does Lindermuth make his characters believable and entertaining, he tells a whale of a tale of good people and yesteryear. This book would easily lend itself to a sequel, and this reader hopes that Mr. Lindermuth has just such intentions.

Sounds good-and with the author's research qualifications (newspaper work and genealogy research) I'm betting readers will encounter a strong sense of place and atmosphere-a portrait of a gone world.

Mr. Lindermuth, as you said, has the ability to develop strong characters. I interviewed Sheriff Tilghman for "Paula's Coppers" and felt as if he was there with me. Thanks for the great review.

As a fan of that time period and books like Lonesome Dove and Tom Franklin's "He'll At The Breech," this sounds right up my alley. Have to add it to the pile - can't wait to read it and give it the fifth star.

Sounds like a winner! I wish much success to this book, to Sheriff Tilghman, to Mr. Lindermuth, and to Oak Tree Press, which I'm learning is a first class publisher.
