Rising from nothing, Harry Leonoff is the defender of the underdog. His Jewish family lived in the squalor of New York where he was subjected to horrid racism and oppression. Victimized by polio as a child, he not only has to get through the hatred of ignorance but also much physical pain. Little by little he gains political footing and in the midst of it all he is able to help those who cannot help themselves. However, in his personal life things are miserable. His wife is cold and only cares about stature and "things". His son resents him. His crazy brother in law takes up space. At the very pinnacle of political success he faces his past. A house of cards, it seems, is what his life has become. Harry's grandson sees him as a hero...

The author has done a tremendous amount of research to fill in the holes of his own grandfather's history. While this is a fiction novel, it is loosely based on the life of his beloved elder. Much history is in this story, something that New Yorkers will enjoy. The 1930's was a decade of significance in the city and the book does an excellent job portraying the life of the people who were there. This is a fantastic read and one that can be done on a rainy weekend day. The author is gifted with the ability to draw the readers in, and to release them with the feeling of satisfaction of reading a complete story.
