Carla and James are 11 years old, the age when certain children are chosen for quests. Carla’s quest starts with her spotting a gnome in a red hat in her garden. With James joining her, both of them set off on an adventure that takes them to the magical land of Underice. While following the gnome, they meet various characters who help them and guide them on their quest. They are joined by Geneva, the fairy princess and Davey, the dragon who are on a quest of their own. Are they all meant to be on this quest together? Will they be able to convince Culpepper Fangorn to let bygones be bygones? Will they be able to complete their quests and find out what the gnome was up to by stealing so many objects?

"The Quests of Underice" by Kevin Dangoor is a fantastic fantasy read for kids. It is a book I am sure my kids would enjoy reading once they are old enough. Apart from the fantasy, the book has important lessons on friendship, courage and discipline for children. The main characters are endearing and charm you with their combination of innocence and intelligence. The way in which they learn to overcome hardships and learn about the reason for their quests is heartwarming. The important lessons about the environment, war, global warming, conflict between humans and others has been subtly incorporated into the plot. The best way to educate our children is through stories that they enjoy and can relate to. "The Quests of Underice" by Kevin Dangoor succeeds in doing just that.
