Exploring America Series: Alabama - Travelogue by State: Experience Both the Ordinary and Obscure by Amber Richards is a travel book with a difference. The author looks at every aspect that a visitor to Alabama might want or need to know, from the obvious tourist attractions and scenic drives to ghost towns and folklore and legends. Find out about parks and special places of interest and learn about special seasonal activities. In addition, there is useful information such as safety precautions needed especially when camping, advice about poisonous insects, plants and snakes, and the changeable and unpredictable weather. There’s even some interesting facts about Alabama at the end which make this a concise and helpful guide to the State.
The author, Amber Richards, has created a series and this particular travelogue provides lots of information that might not normally be found in a regular guide. I found it really interesting to learn not just about the usual tourist attractions, but find out what the State is famous for, and to read about the legends and folklore of the area. It is so much more than just a guide; it’s an insight into the people and the places of Alabama. It made me want to visit and explore all the places Amber talks about. Things to be wary of, too, is a great addition. I didn’t know Alabama had six venomous snakes, for instance, so seeing a photo of them and having a description would be invaluable, especially for those planning to camp. This guide encompasses everything a visitor to the State would need to know when planning their journey.
