Keight Stanford’s desire to change the course on which humanity finds itself pushes her to technological breakthroughs with the least harm to all parties involved. She has been making excellent progress on an artificial intelligence program that functions as a therapist to engage people struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who see suicide as the only alternative to daily existence. She has no idea that a dark and disturbing byproduct of her research is growing from the good she is trying to bring into this world. With disaster moments away, can she set aside her differences with the one person capable of preventing imminent chaos in Eric Kay’s Above Dark Waters?

Science takes center stage in this novel. Eric Kay’s storyline has an apocalyptic undertone with the hint of a question surrounding the possible pitfalls in artificial intelligence evolution. The characters are easy enough to follow as their origin stories appear straight to the point in a novel with a high technical slant. The author keeps the conversations relatively simple throughout most of the narrative but one might need to brush up on basic science in the intelligence-oriented discussions. The mild ideological questions posed as the story transitions between chapters do an effective job of immersing the reader in this world. What stands out is the way Kay infuses elements of religion, such as Ed’s supposed afterlife experience, with hardcore scientific ideas like blockchain technology. You will not look at artificial intelligence the same way again after you have read Above Dark Waters.
