For an eight-year-old girl from Grand Rapids, MI, Lulu's family life was often complicated and challenging. She had four older brothers, and her parents struggled with addiction and neglect, leaving Lulu to take care of herself and her siblings when they could not. There were days when she had to cook, clean, mop, and make peanut butter and jelly for her brothers without any help. In Lulu's "Worst Day Ever!", her family's struggles come to a head. Her parents were yelling and throwing items, hitting each other, and it was so scary for her. She tried to give hugs and keep her brother quiet. The police had to intervene to ensure the children's safety. The experience was terrifying and traumatic for Lulu, who was then separated from her brothers and moved to a new home with a new foster family. Lulu blamed herself, wished she could have been a better child, and tried harder to please her parents, thinking that if she had, this might not have happened.
