Growth Tips for the Beginner - Part 1

Everyone has been praising you for your writing, you know that you can write but you are not sure how to grow. There is always fear that accompanies anyone’s first step when they are embarking on a dream. As a beginner, there are a lot of uncertainties. Many authors swear by different tips and, as you work on growing, there is a lot of different advice that you can choose from. Here are a few tips that you should consider if you want to take your writing to the next level.

Read what you want to write

Ever heard that the best readers make the best authors? There is a lot of truth to that statement. Even if you are good at what you do, you will always learn something by reading what others have written. There is no single author who has mastered it all and reading widely will help you develop even better ideas for your work. Make a point of reading books whose genres you are interested in. If you plan to write a non-fiction book on a topic regarding finance, for instance, look up the best-selling books in this category and learn all you can from them. Read historical trends of the genres that you want to write in and compare trends. Keep in mind what worked in the past but does not work now.

Keep writing

Even when you have been rejected, keep writing. When you are experiencing writers’ block, keep writing. When you are not sure of yourself, keep writing. Whether for fun or for work, just keep writing. Like any other talent, practice makes perfect. There are few authors who can boast of having their first ever pieces making it onto the best seller’s list; it takes time. The trick is to start writing even when you do not feel motivated to do so; inspiration will follow when you begin. Sometimes, actually, many times you never feel inspired until you begin. So start writing and you will begin to realize that you have something to write about after all.

Not everything is about you, sorry...

You are writing for readers, not you and even though you know that you are a good writer, always keep in mind that you are writing for others. In the end, it is the reader that you need to please and not yourself. Maintaining this attitude helps you to grow and learn what others need from you. It helps you to avoid pride and keep growing. Just like in any other business, you need to have that balance between being passionate about the product you are putting out there (passion is definitely important) and creating a product that is just right for the consumer. However, the best authors develop styles that may not be popular yet. The authors become somewhat of revolutionists, in that where others expected them to fail, they succeeded marvelously. However, such cases are few and sometimes filling a need that already exists is the safe and sure route that will help you achieve success.
